Some gardens need a sound as much as a plant. These wind chimes hang from a pergola, verandah or branch and turn every breeze into a low, rounded tone, closer to a bell than the high tinkle of cheap chimes. Black anodised aluminium tubes, tuned to a B major pentatonic scale, under a pine wood top and wind catcher. They're equally at home in a garden and as a gift that stays with someone for years.

Why It Stands Out
  • Deep, calm tone — longer aluminium tubes give a low, resonant sound that sits in the background instead of jangling. The deep tone wind chimes people choose for a place they want to relax in
  • Tuned to a pentatonic scale — the tubes are tuned to B major pentatonic, so any combination of notes sounds pleasant together. There's no clashing note
  • Anodised aluminium tubes — aluminium wind chimes don't rust, and the black anodised finish holds up outdoors
  • Pine wood top and wind catcher — warm timber against black metal, so it looks as good as it sounds
  • Thick polyester cords — heavier cord than typical budget chimes, holding the tubes level and in tune
  • Large metal hook — hangs straight from a hook, beam or branch with nothing extra to buy
  • A gift that lasts — a popular sympathy gift and memorial wind chime. It hangs in the garden and is heard every time the wind moves. Just as good as a housewarming, birthday or Christmas present, and one of the easier gifts for gardeners

Where to Use
  • Verandahs and pergolas — the classic spot, under cover and in the breeze, where you'll hear it from inside
  • Tree branches — hung as garden wind chimes from a sturdy low branch near a seat or path, it turns a corner of the garden into somewhere to sit
  • Balconies and courtyards — hang from a bracket or ceiling hook. Pick a spot that gets some breeze but not a constant gale
  • Memorial gardens — beside a favourite plant, bench or garden bed set aside to remember someone
  • Near a window or bedroom — the low tone is gentle enough to keep near the house without being intrusive

How It Works

1. The wind catcher moves first — the wooden sail at the bottom picks up even a light breeze.
2. It swings the striker — the cord carries the movement up to the striker in the middle of the tubes.
3. The striker taps the tubes — each aluminium tube rings at its own note, and longer tubes give the lower tones.
4. The notes blend — because the tubes share a pentatonic scale, the tones always sound in harmony.

How to Use

1. Unpack and untangle — lay the chime out and let the cords straighten before you hang it.
2. Pick a firm hanging point — a hook, beam, bracket or solid branch.
3. Hang it by the top hook — make sure the tubes hang free with space all around.
4. Keep it clear of walls and windows — so it doesn't knock against hard surfaces in a gust.
5. Move it to tune the volume — more open spots give more sound; sheltered spots give softer, occasional notes.
Tip: hang it where you sit, not where the wind is strongest. A gentle breeze gives the nicest tone; a constant strong wind just makes it busy.

Care and Maintenance
  • Take it down before storms — strong winds can tangle the cords or swing the tubes hard against each other
  • Check the cords every few months — sun wears any cord over time. Retie or restring if one looks frayed
  • Wipe the tubes — a damp cloth removes dust and salt spray, especially near the coast
  • Keep the timber dry where you can — hanging under cover helps the pine top and wind catcher last longer
