Possums, rats, and larger birds are relentless — they'll empty a bird feeder in minutes and crowd out the small birds it was meant for. This Hanging Bird Feeder stops them with physics rather than guesswork. A weight-activated spring mechanism closes the seed ports the moment a heavier animal lands, while small birds — light enough to stay below the trigger threshold — feed completely undisturbed. No batteries, no electricity, no ongoing intervention required.

Built to Outsmart Backyard Pests

Spring-loaded weight sensor — the perch sits on a tensioned internal spring. Light birds pass the threshold with room to spare; anything heavier pushes the spring past its limit and the ports close on their own

Metal body, nothing to gnaw through — the cage and feeding tube are rust-resistant coated metal from top to bottom, so there's no soft plastic edge for a determined animal to chew open

Built for outdoor exposure — a sealed lid keeps rain and damp out, drainage holes let any moisture escape, and the coating resists corrosion through repeated wet-dry cycles

Room for a crowd — several feeding ports mean multiple birds can perch and eat at once, which brings in a wider mix of visitors: rainbow lorikeets, fairy-wrens, honeyeaters, finches, and other small garden species

Fewer refills — the reservoir holds enough seed to cover several days of normal feeding activity

Quick to top up — the lid twists open for a wide-mouth pour, no funnel or fiddly small openings

Zero power draw — the whole mechanism is spring and gravity, so it's working the same on day one and day one thousand

Where It Fits in Your Garden

Garden beds and trees — hang from a sturdy branch, a shepherd's hook, or a dedicated feeder pole
Deck or patio — position it near a window and you've got a front-row seat to feeding activity
Front yard — a hanging feeder doubles as a bit of movement and colour near the entrance
Any season — the sealed, rust-resistant build is designed to sit outside year-round without babying

The Mechanism, Explained

Setting the threshold: the internal spring is tensioned to hold under roughly 15–50 grams — the range of a typical small garden bird — but gives way well before that under the weight of a possum, rat, or other larger animal, closing the ports before they can reach the seed.
Resetting itself: there's nothing to manually re-open. The instant the extra weight lifts off the perch, the spring pulls the ports back to their normal feeding position.
Keeping seed dry: the sealed top blocks rain from getting in, while holes in the base let condensation and stray moisture drain back out instead of pooling.

How It Compares
This Feeder Standard Plastic Feeder Baffle-Only Feeder
Stops pests automatically Spring-activated, no manual step ✓ No mechanism at all Often gets climbed around
Resists chewing Solid metal build ✓ Plastic wears through fast Depends on the model
Handles weather long-term Rust-resistant coating ✓ Breaks down in sun/UV Depends on the model
Needs power or batteries Never — mechanical ✓ No No
Getting Started
  1. Choose a spot at least 1.5 metres off the ground and roughly 3 metres clear of trees, fences, or anything a pest could launch from
  2. Clip the included hook onto a branch, shepherd's hook, or feeder pole
  3. Twist the lid open and pour in your seed of choice
  4. Twist the lid back down until it's fully seated
  5. Give it the better part of a week — local birds typically need a few days to find a new feeder

Tip: A varied seed mix tends to pull in more species than a single seed type. If you're replacing an old feeder, hang this one somewhere different for the first week or so while birds adjust.

Cleaning & Upkeep

✓ Give it a full clean roughly every one to two weeks — take it apart, scrub with warm water and a brush, and let every piece dry completely before refilling
✓ Clear out any leftover damp or old seed before adding fresh
✓ If it's coming off the hook for a while, store it somewhere dry indoors
